Here's what we've learned from tracking AI visibility across hundreds of brands: well-positioned brands show consistent results.
When we run the same query against the same model multiple times, strong brands appear reliably. Their mentions are stable. The context around them is consistent. The AI has, for lack of a better term, made up its mind about what that brand represents and when to surface it.
Weak positioning looks different. The brand sometimes appears and doesn't at other times. The context shifts—mentioned for quality in one response, absent in the next, appearing as an afterthought in the third. That's not a monitoring problem. That's a visibility problem.

We've observed tighter consistency in API responses than what Rand's user-side data shows. Why? Possible factors include user personalization, conversation history, A/B testing on consumer products, and temperature settings.
This raises a question worth investigating: if APIs show less variance, are fewer runs needed to capture the signal? Or does API monitoring understate the variance real users experience?
We don't have rigorous data on this yet. Neither does anyone else, as far as we can tell. It's a gap the industry needs to address. For now, we believe API-based monitoring with diverse prompt sets captures directional signal, but we're watching this closely.
The Real Competitive Advantage
Competitors can keep running prompts every day. They'll generate more data points, more dashboard activity, and more opportunities to send you notifications that something changed.
What they won't generate is better outcomes.
